Often Considered The Same, This Is The Difference Between The Birthday Of Pancasila And Pancasila Sanctity Day
YOGYAKARTA - Pancasila is the ideology of the nation as well as the basis of the Indonesian state which is in the life of society, nation and state. There are two important moments related to Pancasila that are commemorated every year, namely the Birthday of Pancasila and the Sanctity Day of Pancasila.
These two moments are often considered the same by some people, even though they have different background and warning goals. The birthday of Pancasila focused on the formulation of the state basis by Soekarno on June 1, 1945, while Pancasila's Day of Sanctity emphasized the nation's determination to defend Pancasila from the threat of a coup in 1965.
Pancasila's Birthday is celebrated every June 1 based on Presidential Decree Number 24 of 2016. This date refers to Ir's speech. Soekarno at the hearing of the Indonesian Independence Preparation Business Investigation Agency (BPUPKI) on June 1, 1945.
In the speech, Soekarno for the first time put forward five basics of the state which were later called Pancasila. The five basics include nationality, humanity, democracy, social justice, and One Godhead.
BPUPKI formed the Committee for Nine to perfect the idea of Pancasila and enact the Constitution which refers to the five principles. After going through several trial processes, Pancasila was finally ratified as the basis for Indonesia's state on August 18, 1945.
The birthday of Pancasila is commemorated not only in memory of Soekarno's speech, but also emphasizing the commitment of all nations in practicing the values of Pancasila. This commemoration is also a momentum to strengthen the unity and integrity of Indonesia in the midst of diversity. Therefore, June 1 was designated as a national holiday.
Meanwhile, Pancasila Sanctity Day is celebrated every October 1 as a form of respect for Pancasila which remained strong despite the threat of a coup. This incident began with the September 30th Movement in 1965 or known as the G30S PKI. That night, seven high-ranking TNI AD officers died in Lubang Buaya, East Jakarta due to the action of the PKI group.
The victims who are known as Revolutionary Heroes are General Ahmad Yani, Lieutenant General R. Soeprapto, Lieutenant General S. Parman, Major General MT Haryono, Major General DI Pandjaitan, Major General Sutoyo Siswomiharjo, and Captain Pierre Tendean.
The tragedy rocked the Indonesian people and became one of the dark histories. However, from that event, the Indonesian nation increasingly emphasized Pancasila as the only state ideology.
The Pancasila Sanctity Day was originally commemorated within the Indonesian Army, then declared a national day through Presidential Decree No. 153 of 1967. The goal is to re-reminist the nation's determination in defending Pancasila from the undermining of other ideologies, especially communism. Unlike the Birthday of Pancasila, this commemoration is not a national holiday.

The fundamental difference between the Birthday of Pancasila and the Sanctity Day of Pancasila lies in the historical context and the purpose of its commemoration. The birthday of Pancasila commemorates the birth of the state basis on June 1, 1945, while the Pancasila Sanctity Day commemorates the events of the G30S PKI which occurred in 1965.
The birthday of Pancasila and the Sanctity Day of Pancasila are equally important as a reminder of the history of the Indonesian nation. These two warnings confirm that Pancasila was born out of the spirit of struggle and is at the same time strong in dealing with threats.
