South Korea Strives To Restore Hundreds Of Post-Fire Public Services At The Data Center

JAKARTA South Korea is still trying to restore its online public services after its data center caught fire. This incident caused disruption on various government-owned websites.

The fire also revealed the vulnerability of digital infrastructure in the country. South Korea is known to connect many government services online, from identification to media briefings.

According to a Reuters report, the government managed to recover less than a tenth of the service that was disrupted. However, there is still a lot that needs to be improved as this incident affects about 647 public service systems.

The impact of this disturbance attacks various important sectors, including police services, fire fighting, and customs authorities. The Ministry of Safety's website was also affected. There is no certainty when the total recovery will be carried out.

Security Minister Yun Ho-jung stated that only 62 systems had just been restored. He also noted that the main portals of public services such as Government24 and the Korea Post-run financial system and posts looked 'recovered every hour'.

President Lee Jae Myung also spoke about this incident. He apologized for the disturbance felt by the community. Jae Myung also admitted that he was surprised that the government did not have a better reserves, even though a similar blackout had occurred in 2023.

Please note that this fire occurred on September 26 during routine maintenance at the state-owned National Information Resources Service server room. This server is located in Daejeon city.
