Differences In Batik Fabric Styles Liked By Gen X, Millennials, And Gen Z

Batik is the work of Indonesian culture that has been recognized by UNESCO and continues to change with the times. Batik cloth is now not only as formal clothing, but also as a lifestyle for various generations, both Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z.

However, each of these generations has a difference in the style of batik cloth they like, as well as different views on batik.

"The batik trend now actually follows from generations. So from what we learned from Gen X, then to Millennials, then to Gen Z they have different perceptions about batik," said CEO Iwan Tirta Batik, Widiyana Sudirman, when met in the TB Simatupang area, Jakarta, written on Monday, September 29, 2025.

1. Batik at Gen X's point of view

Gen X usually sees batik as a form of respect for culture and tradition. Through the aesthetic side, Gen X also prefers an elegant, formal, and authoritative batik display, which is dominated by dark colors.

"So Gen X they see batik as respect for culture. So it's like using batik to respect culture," said Widiyana.

"Continue for Gen X, maybe still like dark colors, very deep colors," he added.

2. Batik at Millennial point

Millennials generally see batik as a value of craft or work that combines art with artistic expertise. This generation wants batik that prioritizes the modern and casual sides.

"For Millennials, they want to look something like a craft, so there is something modern casual for millennials," he said.

For the style of batik cloth that Millennials like is something that is not too formal. They like the appearance of batik that is kece and a combination of various colors.

"Millennial, maybe the color is still between, but the model has to be stuck, I don't want it to be like a really formal dress," he said.

3. Batik in Padangan Gen Z

As for Gen Z, they see batik is not only from style, it is still through its benefits, especially related to sustainable sustainability fashion or fashion. They really think about the impact of batik on the environment.

"For Gen Z, what kind of batik do you want, for the surrounding environment. So talk for sustainability," he continued.

Regarding colors, Gen Z usually likes to dominate young colors. Such as beige to pink, which is divided into types.

"Well, when it comes to Gen Z, you want a light color, dark and light cream, dark pink and light," concluded Widiyana.
