YouTube Relys On Machines And Human Reviews To Eradicate Online Gambling In Comments

JAKARTA - The Indonesian government is collaborating with various parties, including Ministries/Institutions as well as digital platforms, currently making various efforts to eradicate online gambling.

It is undeniable that currently the comments column of every video uploaded on YouTube must be tucked away with comments on online gambling spam.

Responding to the rise of online gambling spam in the comments column YouTube, Head of Government Relations and Public Policy of Southeast Asia, Danny Ardianto emphasized that they already have their own community guidelines.

Thus, comments and other content that violate Community Guidelines will be immediately dealt with firmly by YouTube, such as takedown.

"Actually, in terms of YouTube policy, whether video, comments, live stream, there are YouTube community guidelines. So if there is a comment, or a video that violates YouTube community guidelines, we will take it down," he explained to the media when met in Jakarta.

In addition, Danny also emphasized that YouTube is already relying on a combination of machine technology and manual reviews to monitor negative content, including online gambling.

According to him, this step was taken because the pattern and mode of violation continued to change from time to time.

"So we use the machine too, and we balance the machine with the human review as well. Because sometimes the mode changes, right. So it's not just for gambling, this is for anything, for example violence, it's the same, comments can also be taken down," he explained.

Meanwhile, Director General of Digital Space Supervision of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Alexander Sabar has said that eradicating online gambling is not enough just by blocking content and technology.

Although technological developments are one of the main factors for online gambling is difficult to eradicate, there are two other factors that follow it, namely procedures and people or the community itself.

He explained that the root of the main problem, which is a challenge to eradicating online gambling, is also located in the high demand (demand) in the community.

"It's not that we want to blame our society, but this is a fact that happened. If we look at the principles of development or people creating online gambling sites, because there is demand, there is demand in society," said Alex.
