BINUS Students Create Sign Language Translator Tools With GPUs

JAKARTA - A BINUS student has succeeded in developing a solution to bridge communication between deaf friends and the general public. This tool utilizes Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) technology.

The tool developed by Marvel Martawidjaja, a student of School of Computer Science (SoCS) BINUS, is a signal language translator system into text and voice in real-time. This system is able to read the movements of deaf friends.

This tool was developed after Marvel realized that there was a communication gap between people with hearing impairments and the general public. He also admitted that it was difficult to learn sign language so that he thought of the right tools to communicate.

Marvel wants to break these barriers with technology. Therefore, it makes a solution that focuses on signatures of the hand which is then converted into text. This text will then be turned into a voice that can be heard by the interlocutor.

This technology has great potential to be applied in various sectors, especially in the educational environment. According to Marvel, educators in regular schools face major challenges in line with the government's implementation of inclusiveness regulations.

"In these regular schools, students (or) students who have needs need to be facilitated properly," Marvel explained at the RTX 50 Series Back to School event on Friday, September 26. He hopes this innovation can help many students with special needs.

The Importance Of The Use Of GPU

One of the keys to the success of this project is the use of GPUs for data processing. In its demonstration, Marvel showed a significant comparison between performance using GPUs and CPUs. This difference in performance is striking in terms of latency.

During testing, Marvel managed to prove that the tools it developed were able to detect real-time hand movements. This is capable of doing with a GPU. However, if only with a CPU, the system will work very slowly.

Marvel explained that with GPUs, the system can run almost 2.5 times faster than CPUs. This speed is very important so that communication can run well.
