Yusril Asks Police To Accelerate Legal Process For Suspects Of August Riots
JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correction Yusril Ihza Mahendra asked the police to speed up the legal process against the suspect in a demonstration that ended in chaos at the end of August 2025.
The message was conveyed by Coordinating Minister Yusril in a press conference after a coordination meeting with the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Police regarding the discussion of the follow-up to mass arrests after a demonstration at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Rights, Kumham Imipas, Jakarta, Friday, September 26.
"My message to Bareskrim is that we do this process faster. The sooner it will be better, even though it does not reduce our caution, our accuracy, in conducting investigations, especially until the delegation of cases to the prosecutor's office later," he said as quoted by ANTARA.
Yusril explained that until now, 997 people were detained and named suspects in connection with the riot incident during the demonstration.
This number consists of 971 suspects in general crimes and 26 suspects in sedition crimes violating Law Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions (ITE).
According to Yusril, of the hundreds of suspects, not many of the results of the investigation were declared complete (P21).
"Very few, yes, there are only six cases that have been transferred to the prosecutor's office and there are around 15 that are still going back and forth from the prosecutor's office to the police," he said.
He said the legal process against the suspects was important to speed up so that they would not be detained protracted.
Although still justified by law, Yusril said detention for a long time would create feelings of discomfort for the suspect and his family.
"The important thing is that we must accelerate and the police agree to speed this up, although it is not easy to do this," he said.
