Ministry Of Foreign Affairs' Appeal For Indonesian Citizens In Disaster-affected Areas: Stay Alert!

YOGYAKARTA - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) reported that all Indonesian citizens living in areas affected by Typhoon Ragasa are confirmed to be safe. So what is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' appeal for Indonesian citizens in disaster-affected areas?

It is known that the typhoon hit several areas from Guangdong, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, to Manila.

"There are no reports of Indonesian citizens being victims or affected by Super Typhoon Ragasa," said Director of Protection for Indonesian Citizens (PWNI) of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Judha Nugraha in a written statement in Jakarta, as quoted from Antara, Wednesday (24/9).

Judha explained that the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong, the Indonesian Embassy in Manila,tteryI Taipei, and the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou had coordinated with local authorities and the Indonesian citizen community, especially in the affected areas.

In Taiwan, the Central Emergency Operation Center (CEOC) reported that a total of 14 people came from Taiwan, while Manila, since Tuesday night (23/9), Typhoon Super Ragasa has been outside Manila.

In the Hong Kong region, the local government has lowered its status from T8 (level 8) to T3 (level 3) at 20.20 Hong Kong time on Wednesday (24/9). So far there have been no reports of casualties due to Typhoon Super Ragasa in Hong Kong and Macau.

Together with the Indonesian Consulate General in Hong Kong, Taipei, the Indonesian Embassy in Manila, and the Indonesian Consulate General in Guangzhou, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to carry out close monitoring regarding the development of the situation and disaster emergency conditions due to the Super Ragasa Topan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also appealed to Indonesian citizens who are in areas affected by the Super Ragasa Topan to always increase their vigilance. As has been reported, in the last few days the Super Ragasa Typhoon hit a number of Philippine and Chinese regions. The Typhoon caused floods and landslides at various locations.

According to a China Central Television (CCTV) report on Tuesday (23/9), Typhoon Super Ragasa resulted in more than 1 million people being evacuated in Guangdong, China. Schools, business premises, and public transportation services had to be disabled.

In Shenzhen, 400,000 residents in areas estimated to be the most vulnerable because of the escape from Ragasa, were also evacuated to safer areas.

In Hong Kong, Typhoon Ragasa causes flooding with strong currents that have an impact on the tenagaon Ocean Park hotel.

Hong Kong's meteorological agency warned that strong winds with hurricanes could likely occur off the coast and highlands on Wednesday. This condition is followed by heavy rains which are expected to cause major storms and high sea waves.

The Hong Kong government has also warned of the potential for sea level rise, which was similar during the 2017 Topan Hato and Topan Mangkhut events in 2018. Both events caused billions of dollars in losses.
