Kpop Director Demon Hunters Calls The Initial Idea Of Film Not Coming From K-pop Music

JAKARTA - Director Maggie Kang revealed that the K-pop element in Netflix's best-selling animated film, Kpop Demon Hunters, was not the original idea of the project.

This was conveyed by him while attending the Netflix Creative Asia conference at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), South Korea, last weekend.

Kang, who was born in Korea, has a strong desire to present a Korean animation project on the small screen of something he feels he has not seen in his decades of career in the Hollywood animation industry.

"I really never found a single 12 or 13-year-old working in the animation industry in Hollywood," Kang said, quoted by Variety, Thursday, September 25.

Initially, the idea of this film was rooted in his interest in Korean mythology and supernatural creatures he had heard of since childhood. The interest in these demons naturally leads to the concept of demon hunters, namely an extraordinary group of women fighting demons.

"Ide about demons naturally leads to demon hunters, a very extraordinary group of women who fight demons," she said.

However, Kang felt that the basic idea was not strong enough. "But the idea needed something else. That's not enough," he added.

K-pop elements were also included, changing the scale and attraction of the film instantly. Kang highlighted the attraction of K-pop that crosses culture and is able to inject massive musical energy.

"The film immediately grew on a scale," said the director. "The film became a musical, and there were more shows."

Meanwhile, the success of KPop Demon Hunters is not only on the small screen, but also on the music charts. The second single from the film soundtrack album, 'Golden', managed to rank first in the US and UK. The enthusiasm for this film was also shown by the K-pop group, Twice, which covered the song 'Takedown' for the soundtrack album.

"Their joy at this film really proves what we want to achieve and go to the K-pop world," concluded Kang.
