YouTube Intensifies AI-Based Age Verification And Implements Restrictions

JAKARTA - YouTube is starting to expand its use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based age verification this week, with many users in the US reporting their accounts have been restricted.

In July, YouTube announced it would use AI to identify spectators under the age of 18. Initially, this feature was only applied to a small group of users, but YouTube later announced that this feature would be implemented more widely.

To determine whether a spectator is under 18 years of age, YouTube uses the age of the account and content to watch. YouTube explains:

Age estimation models use a variety of signals, such as activity on YouTube and account ownership length. If we determine you are under 18 years old, you will be notified. As usual, you have the option to verify your age (through official ID, selfie, or credit card) if you feel our age estimation model is wrong.

If an account is identified as belonging to a user under 18 years of age, YouTube imposes some restrictions, including:

Although the launch of AI-based age verification began in mid-August, its implementation increased rapidly in the last 24 hours as of September 24. Based on reports on the r/youtube subreddit, many users reported AI age verification on their accounts within that period of time. Previously, very few users were affected by this restriction.

Users whose accounts are limited will see pop-ups, both in mobile/tablet apps and video players on the web, who tell that their account settings have changed and they need to verify age.

As explained in August, age verification for users over 18 includes options such as showing official ID, taking verification selfies, or using credit cards to prove age.
