Prabowo Conveys NZE RI's Economy At The United Nations, Minister Of Industry For The Drafting Of The Decarbonization Roadmap

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto emphasized Indonesia's commitment to realizing net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060. In fact, Prabowo believes that NZE's target can be achieved more quickly.

This was conveyed by Prabowo in his speech at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UN) in New York, United States (US), Tuesday, September 23, local time.

"Indonesia is moving firmly from fossil fuel-based development to renewable energy-based development," Prabowo said. Starting next year, the majority of the additional national power generation capacity will come from renewable energy.

The big goal, said Prabowo, is to lift all people from poverty and at the same time place Indonesia as a center for food, energy and water security solutions in the world.

Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the speech of the Head of State was in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement, emphasizing the principle of overcoming climate change through the green energy transition.

"This is in line with the Ministry of Industry's commitment to continue to encourage energy transition and accelerate decarbonization in the industrial sector to achieve the NZE target by 2050, ten years faster than the national target. This effort is made considering that the industrial sector is a significant contributor to emissions," Agus said in his official statement, Wednesday, September 24.

"We have established an industrial decarbonization strategy to achieve the green industry," he continued.

According to Agus, his party has compiled a roadmap for decarbonization, implementation of carbon trading mechanisms, implementation of carbon capture utilization (CCU) technology, formation of green industry service companies (GISCO), certification of green industries and encouraging efficiency and sustainability principles in industry.

"There are nine priority industrial sectors that are the focus of accelerating decarbonization, namely the cement, fertilizer, metal, pulp and paper industries, textiles, chemicals, automotive food and beverages as well as the automotive industry," he explained.

Agus said that the determination of the priority sector considers that the resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are higher when compared to other industries.

"Currently, we are preparing a decarbonization roadmap for each priority industrial sector. We hope that the low-emission transformation and environmentally friendly industries can be achieved soon," he explained.
