AI Enters Global Challenges List, Will Be Discussed By The UN Security Council Today

JAKARTA - Artificial intelligence (AI) is on the list of global challenges world leaders and diplomats must face at the United Nations (UN) annual high-level meeting this week.

Since the AI explosion began with a ChatGPT debut about three years ago, his extraordinary technological capabilities have amazed the world. Tech companies are immediately competing to develop a better AI system.

Even AI innovation efforts were carried out amid an expert warning of AI risks, such as a engineering pandemic, large-scale misinformation, or rogue AI that went out of control.

Citing AN, Wednesday, September 24, the United Nations then tried to adopt new governance to control AI. Previous multilateral efforts, including three AI summits hosted by Britain, South Korea, and France, were not optimal because they only produced non-binding promises.

Last month, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to form two key bodies of AI a global forum and an independent panel of scientific experts in an important step to grazing global governance efforts for AI technology.

Today, the UN Security Council is scheduled to hold an open debate forum to discuss the issue.

Some of the questions that are planned to be discussed in the forum include 'how can the UN Security Council help ensure the implementation of AI responsible for complying with international law and supporting the peace process and preventing conflict?'

Meanwhile, tomorrow, Thursday, September 25, UN Secretary-General Ant Totalio Guterres is scheduled to hold a meeting titled 'Global Dialogue on AI Governance' as part of the UN's annual high-level meeting.

The meeting was a forum for governments of UN member countries and "employees of interest" to discuss international cooperation and share ideas and solutions, including AI-related issues.

Furthermore, the Global Dialogue on AI Governance will be continued in the official forum in Geneva, Switzerland in 2026 and in New York, USA in 2027.

Those who will be involved in this AI-related forum will soon be listed. They will consist of 40 experts in scientific panels, including two common chairmen, one from developed countries and one from developing countries.

This meeting is one of the important things in the UN forum in addition to the Conference of Parties (COP) or the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Ahead of the open debate forum to discuss AI issues and governance held by the UN Security Council today, a number of experts urged UN member states to agree on what is called a red line so that AI can apply at the end of next year.

The experts emphasize AI technology requires a "minimum barrier fence" designed to prevent "the most urgent and unacceptable risk."

They consist of senior employees at OpenAI, ChatGPT producer, Google AI research laboratory, DeepMind, and chatbot manufacturer Anthropic.

These experts have previously agreed on an agreement prohibiting nuclear tests, biological weapons, and protecting the high seas.
