Purbaya Regarding Cigarette Excise Tariffs 2026: We Meet Industry First

JAKARTA - Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Purbaya Yudhi Sadive has not yet wanted to reveal the tobacco excise tariff (CHT) 2026. He said he would hold a meeting with industry players to discuss it.

"Later, let me meet them (cigarette industry players) first, let them promise me what it is. Maybe in the past two days (will meet), maybe I will call tomorrow," he told reporters when met at the DPR Building, Jakarta, Parliament Complex, Jakarta, Tuesday, September 23.

Based on the posture of the 2026 State Budget, the target for customs and excise deposits rose to Rp336 trillion from the initial draft of Rp334.3 trillion. This amount increased from the projected revenue this year which amounted to Rp310.35 trillion.

Along with the increase, Purbaya said that excise income does not always have to be by increasing the tariff from CHT.

"The excise income does not have to increase the tariff, right. We want to meet cigarette associations, what is the best step for cigarette excise," he explained.

Purbaya emphasized that his party also wants to protect the domestic cigarette industry. He admitted that he did not want other countries to enjoy profits.

"The important thing is that we want to maintain, lest I turn off the domestic cigarette industry, while the cigarette industry in China is alive, because of those who supply us," he said.

When asked again about the certainty of the 2026 CHT tariff, Purbaya joked that the decision was already in his head. However, he could not divulge it to the public.

"It's in my head, you want to ask for a leak? Don't," he said.
