Refusing to Lose Money, Jeep Cancels Gladiator 4xe PHEV

JAKARTA – The Jeep Gladiator 4xe with plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology has long been planned to join the Wrangler 4xe in Jeep's electrified vehicle lineup. However, Jeep's parent company, Stellantis, has now officially canceled production.

Citing a report by Car and Driver on Tuesday, September 23, this decision was made due to declining consumer interest in PHEV pickup trucks.

"In line with changing consumer preferences for electric trucks, Stellantis has adjusted its product strategy and decided to discontinue the electrified version of the Gladiator," said a Stellantis spokesperson.

However, the future of the Gladiator is not bleak. Stellantis ensures that it will continue investing to ensure the sustainability of this Wrangler-based pickup model. In fact, Jeep plans to introduce more customer-requested factory features, new customization options, and additional engine options.

One of the most anticipated is the arrival of the Gladiator Rubicon 392 variant, which will be equipped with a 470-hp 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine, the same as that used in the Wrangler Rubicon 392, which is known for its 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) acceleration in just 4.0 seconds.

This decision by Stellantis is part of a major overhaul of its electrification product strategy. Previously, the company also canceled plans for the Ram 1500 EV, discontinued the Dodge Hornet, and dropped the R/T trim on the Dodge Charger EV.

For Jeep enthusiasts who still want plug-in hybrid technology, the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe are still available.
