Fishery Waste Becomes Cheap Feed, Pertamina FT Tarakan Wins ENSIA 2025

TARAKAN - Creativity in managing fishery waste carries the name PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Kalimantan through Tarakan's Fuel Terminal (FT) to the national award stage. Through the Silvolestari program, FT Tarakan succeeded in turning shrimp and fish waste which previously polluted the environment into environmentally friendly alternative feed, and won the Silver Predicate at the 2025 Environmental & Social Innovation Award (ENSIA) for the Social Innovation category.

Edi Mangun, Area Manager of Communication, Relations & CSR Regional of Kalimantan, said that this program was born from the real needs of the pond community and breeders in Tarakan who faced high feed prices and waste problems that were not managed optimally.

"This innovation is able to reduce production costs by up to IDR 5,000 per kilogram and reduce more than 50 percent of waste per production cycle," said Edi Mangun.

He explained that the Silvolestari program involved 16 members of the South Gunung Agroforestry KUPS, with the support of the Tarakan City KPH, Borneo Tarakan University, Tarakan City Fisheries Service, and PT SKA business partners.

"Not only building production houses and presenting pellet machines, this program also trains the community, opens market access, as well as fosters confidence as independent business actors," he explained.

This program is a manifestation of Pertamina's commitment to carrying out social and environmental responsibilities that have a direct impact on society. We are not only talking about innovation, but also sustainability and empowerment. ENSIA 2025 is a reminder as well as motivation to continue to innovate by actively involving the community," he added.

He also emphasized that this award was the result of joint work. In addition, the achievement of social innovation does not always have to be on a large scale. With the right approach, waste that is often considered a problem can be a new source of hope.

"In the future, Pertamina FT Tarakan is committed to expanding the impact of Silvolestari's program, presenting more innovations that balance the economic, ecological, and community independence aspects," he concluded.
