Cirebon City Government Operates Earthquake Early Warning System
CIREBON - The Cirebon City Government, West Java has started operating a display early warning system or earthquake early warning system that is directly connected to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
Cirebon City Regional Secretary (Sekda) Agus Mulyadi in Cirebon, Saturday, said the existence of the tool could increase public awareness while accelerating rescue efforts during an earthquake.
According to him, this facility is part of strengthening the resilience of the community in facing the potential for natural disasters in Cirebon City.
"This tool is able to minimize the risk of damage and protect the safety of residents when an earthquake occurs," he said.
Agus explained that the main equipment was installed at the Cirebon City Secretariat Building, while the earthquake sensor was placed at the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) office.
He said the system would be active if it detected an earthquake with a magnitude above 4. The automatic alarm sounded and the officers immediately turned on the siren of the danger sign.
He said all equipment and installations were provided by the central BMKG, while local governments only prepared support for electricity and wifi networks.
Meanwhile, the Head of Cirebon City BPBD Andi Wibowo said that not all regions in West Java received similar facilities from BMKG.
"In addition to Cirebon City, there are Majalengka and Indramayu Regency. We have submitted the proposal since 2024 and this year it is realized," he said.
As a follow-up, his party will hold a simulation of earthquake disaster response as well as a trial of the tool at the end of this year.
"With the operation of the earthquake early warning system, we hope that the community will be more prepared, so that safety can be guaranteed when there is a shock," he said.
