Portugal To Declare Recognition Of Palestinian State

JAKARTA - The Portuguese government will officially recognize the Palestinian State on Sunday (21/9). Portugas follows a number of countries that will announce recognition of the Palestinian state at the UN general assembly.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Portugal would recognize the Palestinian State, as stated by Minister Paulo Range earlier this week. The official declaration of Palestinian State Recognition will take place on Sunday, September 21, before next week's Summit, "the ministry said as reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, September 20.

Earlier, on July 25, French President Emmanuel Macron announced France would officially recognize the Palestinian State at the UN General Assembly in September.

Furthermore, on July 28'30, a high-level international conference on Palestine was held in New York with France and Saudi Arabia as co-chair.

After the conference, the French Foreign Ministry published a joint statement with foreign ministers from 15 Western countries calling for recognition of the Palestinian state.

To date, the Palestinian State has been recognized by 147 countries, including Russia. In 2024, the United States vetoed the full membership of Palestine in the United Nations (UN). In the same year, ten countries have recognized Palestine, including Ireland, Norway, Spain and Armenia.

Russia insists that resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved through a UN-approved two-state solution. The scheme includes the formation of a Palestinian state within the 1967 border with East Jerusalem as the capital.
