Doctors Advise on Using Pillows and Bolsters Correctly to Prevent Spinal Problems!

JAKARTA - To prevent spinal problems such as pain, the proper use of pillows and bolsters while sleeping is crucial. This was stated by orthopedic specialist and spine consultant, Dr. Andra Hendriarto.

Dr. Andra stated that when using a pillow, it shouldn't just be against the head and neck. It's recommended that the pillow also be against the shoulders.

"When sleeping, make sure the pillow isn't just against the head and neck, but also against the shoulders," said Dr. Andra, when met in the Panglima Polim area, Jakarta, on Saturday, September 20.

If the pillow only touches the head and neck, the body will slump over while sleeping. This is certainly not good for posture and can cause pain and affect the shape of the spine.

"This is because if the pillow only touches the head and neck, we sleep in a slumped position. So, it should be slightly supported by the shoulders to maintain an upright position," he added.

Furthermore, when using a bolster, it's best to keep the body upright and avoid curling up while hugging the bolster. A curled-up sleeping position can lead to spinal health problems, especially if maintained over a long period.

"Indonesians tend to sleep on their sides, hugging a bolster, and curling up. Hugging a bolster isn't wrong, but curling up is. This causes the neck to hunch over, and so does the waist; that's not allowed," concluded Dr. Andra.

Using the right pillow can improve sleep quality, reduce neck and back pain, and improve overall posture. Using the right pillow can also help maintain the natural curvature of the cervical spine (lordosis).
