Having Many Cases, Agus Suparmanto Is Considered Heavy As Head Of PPP

JAKARTA - Former Indonesian Minister of Trade (2019-2020) Agus Suparmanto was declared by a number of PPP circles as PPP General Chair Candidates on Monday night (15/09/2025) in Jakarta.

Agus Suparmanto is considered as an external figure who has the potential to lead the United Development Party (PPP) not only because of his experience in the cabinet for one year serving as Minister of Trade but also has financial strength which is considered well established.

Political observer Citra Institute Efriza assessed that a number of cases that occurred and allegedly involved Agus Suparmanto would be a burden for him to run as a candidate for the General Chairperson of PPP.

"Of course this is not easy for Agus Suparmanto, even imported cases, including used clothes, sugar, and garlic, which have become a news record for himself in public memory, will make it even more reputationally difficult to run as a candidate for chairman of PPP," Efriza told the media, Tuesday (16/9/2025).

What is also burdensome for Agus Suparmanto is that he is a cadre of the National Awakening Party, and has no emotional ties to pure party cadres who will also be the owner of voting rights at the X PPP Congress at the end of September.

The PPP is culturally strong and a bit odd to see that the PPP Ketum candidates come from other parties. The risk is that the value of the party's struggle will not be felt, especially since the majority support from the DPW and the PPP DPC actually flowed to Mardiono', he added.

Ahead of the X PPP Congress in Jakarta on 27-29 September 2025, at least a number of candidates for the General Chair continued to emerge, from Muhamad Mardiono, Amran Sulaiman, to Agus Suparmanto, a number of circles assessed that internal consolidation would be the key to PPP's success to bounce back in the 2029 election.
