Observer: Erick Thohir Must Resign From The Chairman Of PSSI!

JAKARTA sports observer Djoko Pekik Irianto suggested Erick Thohir should leave his post as Chairman of PSSI after he was officially appointed as Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora).

Erick was reshuffled from the position of Minister of SOEs and placed as Menpora in Volume III Reshuffle conducted by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace in Jakarta on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

Djoko said that in order to be more ethical, Erick must leave the position of Chairman of PSSI even if there are no regulations regarding concurrent positions.

"That's his own consideration later just because of ethical factors, in my opinion and propriety, because Zainudin Amali gave an example some time ago," said Djoko.

Zainudin Amali officially left the position of Minister of Youth and Sports in March 2023 after he was elected as Deputy General Chair of PSSI accompanying Erick Thohir.

Observations of the sport Kesit Budi Handoyo are much more assertive regarding the steps Erick needs to take. He said that Erick should resign because his new position intersects directly with the world of sports.

"It's different if he is the Minister of SOEs, he doesn't have direct contact with football matters. BUMN policies are not included in the policy regarding football, so it's different when he becomes Menpora," he said.

Kesit emphasized that it seemed very funny that the Menpora had to supervise himself because he had two positions at once in the same field.

"So, in my opinion, to eliminate conflicts of interest, to minimize conflicts of interest, I think Erick must resign from the position of Chairman of PSSI," he said.

After occupying the position of Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir's position in the chair of PSSI General Chair is now a big question. This is because the FIFA Statute regulates that national football associations should not be touched by the hands of third parties.

Thus, the Government, in this case the Ministry of Youth and Sports, should not intervene in any form against national football associations.

If there is intervention, FIFA will automatically impose suspension and prohibit football associations from participating in football tournaments under FIFA supervision.

In addition, concurrent positions are actually prohibited by the National Sports System Law (UU SKN) Number 3 of 2005 Article 40, as well as the Sports Law Number 11 of 2022.

Then the Law of the Ministry of State Article 23, which was strengthened by the decision of the Constitutional Court Number 128/PUU-XXIII/2025, also prohibits ministers or officials at the ministerial level from holding concurrent positions.
