VOI Today: Even Though It Was Canceled, Can The KPU Be Trusted After Issuing A Rule That Can Keep Presidential-Cawapres Candidate Documents Secret?

JAKARTA - On Tuesday, September 16, the KPU officially canceled KPU Decree Number 731 of 2025. The decision issued on August 21 stipulates that several documents on the terms of candidacy for president and vice president cannot be disclosed to the public without the approval of their owners. There are 16 types of documents as excluded information, meaning that they cannot be accessed by the public. including diplomas.

It is known that the virtual world was shocked by the issue of alleged fake diplomas of former President Joko Widodo, the KPU also emphasized that the KPU's decision Number 731 was not issued to protect it, including President Jokowi and Gibran Rakabuming.

The KPU revealed that this cancellation was a response to input and strong criticism that came from various parties, including the Public Information Commission because it was considered to have the potential to violate Law Number 14 of 2008 concerning Public Information Disclosure (KIP). The Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem) considers the General Election Commission (KPU) decision to violate the principles of democratic elections.

The question is, if the regulation is not canceled, who will benefit? Can the previous KPU's excuse in making this decision be justified? So, should it go viral and get blasphemy from the community first, then a controversial rule can be canceled?
