National Police Chief Asked To Release Detained Demonstrators And Immediately Find Missing
JAKARTA - Member of Commission III of the DPR, Benny K. Harman asked the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit to immediately release the detained protesters related to the demonstration at the end of last August. Benny emphasized that expressing opinions in public is a form of freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution.
"I ask the National Police Chief, for the first time, to release all detainees involved in the demonstration case at the end of last August," said Benny, Tuesday, September 16.
Benny also highlighted reports that people who have been allegedly found after the demonstration. He asked the National Police Chief to act quickly and transparently in investigating their whereabouts.
"Second, finding that until now people are suspected of being missing," said the member of the DPR's legal commission in partnership with the National Police.
Benny also supports the formation of an independent Fact Finding Team by Komnas HAM. According to him, the Independent Fact Finding Team can work objectively to uncover the causes of the riots and the potential for illegal riders in the demonstration.
"Thirdly, the Fact Finding Team must objectively disclose what triggers acts of violence and the groups that ride," said Benny.
Benny also ensured that the DPR would be active in monitoring the process of disclosing facts about cases that occurred in the aftermath of a series of community demonstrations some time ago.
"The DPR will be more open and carry out its supervisory function towards the work of the independent Fact Finding Team;" he concluded.
As is known, the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections (Menko Kumham Imipas) Yusril Ihza Mahendra revealed that of the 5,000 people who had been arrested during the demonstration, 4,800 of them had been released and sent home.
Although the majority of the demonstrators have been sent home, there are still 583 people detained. Yusril explained that they were strongly suspected of committing a crime.
Meanwhile, the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) noted that there were still three people who had not been found after the demonstration on August 31, 2025 in the Jakarta area.
The three missing people were identified based on reports through the complaint post formed by KontraS since September 1, 2025. The latest news was that the three people were in two areas, namely Glodok, West Jakarta and Kwitang, Central Jakarta.

The National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM) together with five national human rights institutions formed an Independent Fact Finding Team with Komnas Perempuan, the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia (ORI), the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) and the National Commission for Disabilities (KND).
