Yusril Ensures That The Independent Human Rights Team Is Not The President's Directive Or The Government

JAKARTA - The government through the Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, respects and respects the initiative of six State Institutions (LN) in the field of human rights which formed an independent team of fact-finding related to allegations of violence that occurred in a wave of demonstrations at the end of last August.

The violence that occurred in the wave of demonstrations was known to have claimed injuries, casualties, damage to facilities, and looting of houses of state officials.

Yusril said the government respects the work of these independent state institutions. He said each agency submitted a report on concrete handling steps including visits to the regions that had been carried out.

"That then the six human rights institutions formed an independent team of fact-finding related to excesses and handling demonstrations that led to chaos, this was entirely their initiative as an independent state institution, without any encouragement, let alone directions from the President or the Government," said Yusril in a written statement, Monday 15 September.

Previously, on Friday (12/9), at the Komnas HAM Office, Jakarta, six leaders of independent human rights-related state institutions announced the formation of an independent team to search for facts about violent events in the August-September 2025 demo wave.

The six institutions are Komnas HAM, the National Commission for Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan), the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), the Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia (ORI), LPSK, and the National Commission for Disabilities (KND).

According to Yusril, the formation of the independent team had previously been conveyed by the Chairman of Komnas HAM Anis Hidayah at the Coordination Meeting (Rakor) for handling demonstrations held by the government last week at the office of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Rights, Kumham Imipas.

In the coordination meeting, all related commissions and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) were present, except for the Ombudsman. Yusril stated that an independent state institution was formed by law.

Yusril said that each agency submitted a report on concrete handling steps including visits to areas that had been carried out.

He emphasized that the government respects the independence of the State Human Rights Institution.

"Therefore, when inviting them to a coordination meeting, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Rights, Imipas, really only coordinated without giving any direction to the State Institution in the field of human rights," said Yusril.

"The government respects six human rights institutions whose initiatives to form an independent team, conducted non-juantial investigations into various demonstrations and their handling at the end of last August, with an agenda as they have announced," he continued.

In the same statement, Yusril emphasized that the independent team formed by Komnas HAM et al was different from the proposed formation of the Joint Fact Finding Team (TGPF) as proposed by the Nation Conscience Movement which was fronted by interfaith figures and national figures when meeting with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the palace last week.

He said that if the president formed the TGPF, it must be imposed with a Presidential Decree (Keppres).

"Based on past experience, the formation of the TGPF is usually carried out with a Presidential Decree (Keppres) which also determines the membership, duties, and working period of the team," said Yusril.
