Flash Floods Hit Parapat Sumut, Road Access Paralyzed
JAKARTA - Flash floods hit Parapat, Simalungun, Sumut. As a result the road was covered with rock and mud materials carried away by flooding.
Parapat flash flood occurred around 3:30 p.m., Thursday, May 13, after heavy rains. The cross-Sumatra road is covered with avalanche material carried by flash floods in Sualan Village, Sibaganding, Girsang Sipangan Bolon District.
Simalungun Police Chief, AKBP Agus Waluyo said that traffic was paralyzed along Panatapan Sualan Street, precisely in front of HKBP Sualan Church. Avalanche material in the form of mud mixed with mud and wooden cobs covered the road body.
"Currently the situation is still controlled by members. I went to the location and for a while the traffic flow was closed so that residents do not cross from the location because it is prone to landslides," Agus was quoted as saying by ERA.id.
When flash floods occur, many passing vehicles have to turn around. While on Jalan Sisingamangaraja Parapat some vehicles were dragged by flooding.
The flood came from a small river located in Bukit Bangun Dolok Parapat which empties into Lake Toba. The volume of unable water immediately overflowed into the settlement and closed the highway.
