The Coordinating Ministry For Food Predicts That Rice Self-sufficiency Can Be Achieved This Year
JAKARTA - The Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs (Kemenko Pangan) predicts that self-sufficiency for rice commodities can be achieved this year, thus supporting national food security.
"If we say self-sufficiency for rice commodities, it can be achieved this year," said Deputy for Affordability and Food Safety at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Nani Hendiarti as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, September 11.
According to him, the achievement of food self-sufficiency, especially rice, this year thanks to the land extensification program and the policy of accelerating the development of food areas.
The government emphasizes the use of sleeping land as a strategic step to increase national production capacity, so that food availability can be met without relying on imports.
In addition to increasing production, the government is also paying serious attention to the impact of climate change, by ensuring food security is maintained despite facing increasingly complex environmental challenges.
The extensification program is carried out with environmentally friendly principles, ensuring that food system development continues to pay attention to land use procedures, restoration, and the sustainability of the agricultural ecosystem nationally.
The government has also prepared various additional programs, such as free nutritious food and strengthening village cooperatives, all of which support strengthening the foundation of sustainable food security.
This food self-sufficiency policy is emphasized as an important part of the development of a populist economy, where food is placed as a center for driving people's welfare.
The Coordinating Ministry for Food assesses the village as the center of the food development ecosystem, so strengthening villages is the main key in achieving the national self-sufficiency and food security targets.
With high optimism, the government targets this year's food self-sufficiency to be realized, having a positive impact on national resilience and Indonesia's position in the global arena.
The Coordinating Ministry for Food emphasized that self-sufficiency is not only to meet domestic needs, but also to support other countries through international assistance, although the current capacity is still limited.
"In the future, we may also have to be on guard to be able to support, for example countries that really need (rice) because now we also have international assistance, but there is still a small quota," said Nani.
In general, the Coordinating Ministry for Food has designed three parts to support self-sufficiency in food first intensification including the provision of fertilizers for farmers; acceleration of development, improvement, rehabilitation and operation and maintenance of irrigation networks; utilization of agricultural instructors; provision of superior seeds; and blue food.
Second, extensification includes the development of rice fields in the new food barn area; acceleration of the development of food, energy and water self-sufficiency areas. The other three programs include government food reserves and food price stabilization; waste management, free nutritious food; and Red and White Village/Sub-District Cooperatives.
