Palestinian President Condemns Israeli Attack on Hamas Leader in Qatar

JAKARTA - The Palestinian president condemned the Israeli attack that targeted senior Hamas militant leaders in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday.

Israel attempted to assassinate Hamas political leaders with an airstrike in Qatar, escalating its military campaign in the Middle East.

Israel's brutal attack on Qatar constitutes a serious violation of international law and an escalation that threatens regional security and stability, President Mahmoud Abbas said, as quoted by WAFA on September 10.

The attack was widely condemned in the Middle East and beyond as an act that could further escalate tensions in an already tense region.

President Abbas stressed the importance of an immediate end to the escalation, warning that its continuation would have repercussions not only for the region but also for the entire world.

"The solution lies in a just and comprehensive peace for the Palestinian cause," President Abbas stated.

As previously reported, Israel launched an attack on Hamas leadership in Qatar, expanding its military campaign that has spanned the entire Middle East to include the Gulf Arab state where the Palestinian Islamist group has long had a political base.

An Israeli official confirmed to Reuters that Israel had launched an attack on Hamas leaders in Qatar.

Qatar's Al Jazeera television, citing Hamas sources, said the attack targeted Hamas ceasefire negotiators in Gaza.

Several explosions were heard in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday, September 9, according to Reuters witnesses.

Black smoke billowed from the Legtifya gas station in the city. Next to the station is a small residential complex that has been guarded by Qatari emirates forces 24/7 since the start of the Gaza conflict.

Israeli media, citing a senior Israeli official, said the attack targeted top Hamas leaders, including Khalil al-Hayya, the exiled head of Hamas in Gaza and a key negotiator.

Hamas confirmed that none of its officials were killed in the attack. However, it said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had ordered the Israeli military to prepare to attack leaders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, following Monday's deadly attack in Jerusalem.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had carried out special operations against senior Hamas officials, but did not specify the locations. The statement came amid reports of a series of explosions in Doha.

Qatar's authorities held Israel responsible and condemned the attack as a threat to civilians. Later, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office issued a statement stating that Israel had initiated and carried out this operation against Hamas leaders independently and was fully responsible for it, according to TASS.
