The House Of Representatives Considers The People's Anger A Strong Warning And Corrections To The Council

JAKARTA - Member of Commission III of the DPR RI, Benny K. Harman mentioned the increasing criticism and expression of public dissatisfaction with the DPR recently. Benny considers that the DPR must reform itself in order to optimize its function as a people's representative institution.

"The anger must be seen as a stern warning and correction for the council. The people demand change, not just a change of face. They want the DPR to return to being an institution that represents the interests of the people, not an extension of the oligarchy," said Benny, Wednesday, September 10.

Benny also acknowledged the importance of the DPR Reform as a realization of the people's expectations. The 17+8 demand will be realized if there is internal reform of the DPR. The Council's Apparatus must be reorganized so that it is conducive for every member of the DPR to carry out its constitutional rights in order to carry out the supervisory function. Without being accompanied by internal reforms, it is impossible for these demands to be met," he explained.

The legislator from the NTT I electoral district assessed that the DPR needed to make comprehensive improvements to the functions and roles of the legislature. He said that restoring public trust in legislative institutions is an important part of efforts to maintain democracy.

"History proves: every time parliament loses legitimacy, democracy is on the brink. Saving democracy means saving the DPR. And saving the DPR means restoring sovereignty to the people," said Benny.

This member of the House of Representatives Law Commission added that the existence of the House of Representatives as a people's representative institution can only be maintained if it continues to stand on the principle of representation. In addition, said Benny, with accountability.

"Democracy will only live if the DPR stands tall as a people's house, not a stage of playing power," he concluded.

For information, the DPR's reform is included in one of the 17+8 demands of the People born after a massive demonstration some time ago.

Some of these demands include the reformation of the DPR, the ratification of the Asset Confiscation Bill, the release of all detained demonstrations, the establishment of an Independent Investigation Team in the case of Affan Kurniawan, Umar Amarudin, as well as all victims of violence by the authorities during the August 28-30 demonstration, to a number of tasks for President Prabowo Subianto.

The DPR has answered the 17+8 demand through several steps. There are six points in the DPR's answer, which is the result of the consultation meeting of the DPR leadership along with the factions, responding to the '17+8 of the People's Demand'.

A number of steps that are the response of the DPR are related to facility cuts, business travel moratoriums, and increased transparency in parliament.
