BMKG Records 4,071 Earthquakes In Indonesia Throughout August 2025

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded that 4,071 earthquakes occurred in Indonesia during August 2025.

Of these, 21 earthquakes have a magnitude of more than 5.0. While the other 4,050 earthquakes have a magnitude of 5.0.

BMKG's Director of Earthquakes and Tsunamis, Daryono, said that although the number of earthquakes in August 2025 was quite high, most of it had small strengths.

"Earthquakes with a magnitude below 5.0 dominate, and only a few are felt by the community. Of the thousands of earthquakes, 90 earthquakes were recorded and three of them caused damage," Daryono said in an official statement Saturday, September 6.

The three earthquakes that caused damage were:

1. The Sarmi earthquake, Papua with a magnitude of M6.3 on August 12, 2025.2. The Poso earthquake, Central Sulawesi had an M5.8 magnitude on August 17, 2025.3. The Karawang earthquake, West Java had an M4.7 magnitude on August 20, 2025.

Daryono reiterated the importance of the public filtering information related to earthquakes. "Those who really understand earthquake science will be very careful and do not dare to make earthquake predictions in public. On the other hand, those who do not understand earthquake science often dare to talk about earthquake predictions," he said.
