KAI Transports 45.25 Million Tons Of Goods Until August, The Most Coal

JAKARTA - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) or recorded a positive performance in the freight transportation sector. Throughout January to August 2025, KAI's freight transportation volume reached 45.25 million tons.

KAI vice president of Public Relations, Anne Purba, explained that this number increased by around 0.41 percent compared to the same period the previous year.

"Throughout January to August 2025, KAI's freight transportation volume was 45,257,245 tons, an increase compared to the same period in 2024 of 45,073,608 tons. Especially in August 2025, transportation volume reached 6,026,111 tons," said Anne, in an official statement, Thursday, September 4.

Anne explained that the majority of goods transportation is dominated by coal commodities with a total of 37,472,881 tons or 82.80 percent of the total transportation.

"Coal from South Sumatra is the backbone of energy supply for power plants in Java and Bali. This success is not only an operational achievement, but also a form of real contribution from KAI in maintaining national energy resilience," said Anne.

Anne said, this train mode has the advantage of being able to transport goods in large capacities with high efficiency is the main factor in this achievement.

On the island of Java, a series of freight trains can attract up to 30 carriages with a capacity of 42 tons each, while in South Sumatra the efficiency is getting higher with a series of up to 61 carriages.

"KAI also consistently maintains service standards through certified human resources, periodic inspections of infrastructure facilities, and strict operational control to ensure safety and timeliness," he said.

According to Anne, KAI's freight transportation now plays a vital role in supporting the smooth running of national logistics, both energy and industrial needs. In the future, KAI targets its role to develop into part of a global logistics network.

"With the capacity that continues to be improved and the development of new logistics nodes, KAI is ready to be present as a logistics solution that supports Indonesia's competitiveness in the international market," he explained.

KAI is also targeting a 15 percent growth in the volume of goods transport in 2029, with a coal transportation projection of 111.2 million tons and a non-coal commodity of 10.9 million tons.

Anne said this strategy would be supported by the development of strategic logistics nodes, such as Tarahan II Terminal in South Sumatra with a capacity of up to 18 million tons of coal, as well as the expansion of facilities in Kertapati with an additional capacity of 7 million tons.

South Sumatra will be the main pillar of increasing KAI's freight transportation in the next five years with an additional potential of up to 27.8 million tons. This strengthens KAI's role as a reliable logistics partner for economic growth as well as sustainability," concluded Anne.
