Coal Exports Drop 21.74 Percent, Here's Why!
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has opened its voice regarding the decline in coal commodity exports from January to July 2025, which decreased by 21.74 percent to 13.82 billion US dollars.
Director General of Mineral and Coal (Minerba) Tri Winarno admitted that the decline in export value had indeed occurred due to the recent increase in production capacity in China and India.
Moreover, he continued, China and India are two major export countries of Indonesian coal.
"Those are China and India, the production capacity has indeed increased. Well, while we export mainly to the two countries. So, it's only natural," Tri told the media crew in the Parliament area, Wednesday, September 3.
He added that the ups and downs of export value were normal things, such as fluctuations in coal commodity prices.
"Actually, this is the cycle, yes, it goes up and down, prices go up and down. That's how it is," continued Tri.
To overcome this decline, Tri said his ministry had explored alternative export countries other than China and India. Instead of exporting to Europe, Tri has asked the Coal Mining Association (APBI) to target Asean countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
"We have also spoken with the APBI, try to explore, for example Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, then the Philippines," he explained.
