Overcoming Fear, 22 Detained Protesters Admit to Using Drugs Before the Riot at the House of Representatives

JAKARTA - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) stated that 22 people arrested in connection with the riots in several areas of Jakarta were found to have used narcotics and hard drugs. Investigations revealed that they used the drugs to alleviate their fear of demonstrations.

"They used the drugs to increase motivation and eliminate their fear during the demonstrations," said the Director of Narcotics Investigation at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Ahmad David, to reporters on Tuesday, September 3.

Urine tests showed that the 22 people tested positive for methamphetamine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and hard drugs.

Furthermore, during the investigation, they admitted to using drugs several days before their involvement in the riots.

"After conducting our investigations and assessments, we found that they were using them three to seven days before the demonstrations or riots," he said.

With this information, they will be prosecuted. Not only that, dozens of people will also undergo rehabilitation.

"We will apply Article 127 paragraph 1 to drug users and provide treatment and rehabilitation to help them recover, both socially and medically," said David.

The 22 individuals were the first cluster to be arrested from several riot hotspots on August 25th.

Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Ade Ary Syam Indradi, stated that the riot hotspots were located around the DPRI/MPR Building and Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta.

"Investigators also discovered an anarchic incident on August 25th in front of the DPR/MPR Building at Gelora Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, which escalated into violence, resulting in the arrest of 337 people," said Ade.
