Landslide In Sudan Kills 1,000 Villagers, Only One Survives

JAKARTA - Reportedly 1,000 people died as a result of being buried by landslides that destroyed a village in the Marra Mountains area, western Sudan. Only one survivor of the village.

The Sudanese Liberation Movement reported landslides occurred on August 31 after days of heavy rain.

The group led by Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour has pleaded with the United Nations and international aid agencies to help find the bodies of the victims, including men, women, and children.

The village has now been razed to the ground, said the movement, reported by Reutres, Tuesday, September 2.

Refuting from the raging war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the state of North Darfur, residents seek refuge in the Marra Mountains region where food and medicine are insufficient.

The two-year civil war has left more than half of the population facing crisis-level hunger and forced millions of people to flee their homes, while the capital of North Darfur state, Al-Fashir, is under attack.
