Home Affairs Minister Responds to TikTok's Live Feature Being Disabled: Looting Was Also Livestreamed
JAKARTA - Minister of Home Affairs Tito Karnavian has spoken out regarding the temporary disabling of the live broadcast feature on the TikTok app. He stated that there are currently many movements on social media that are provoking the public.
"We are currently seeing that these movements are using social media, especially TikTok, so be careful," he said at the 2025 Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting on Tuesday, September 2.
Tito also highlighted the looting of several houses belonging to members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) and Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, which were broadcast live on TikTok.
"The looting was also live, and the live broadcast was on TikTok. This makes it very easy for the public to be provoked," he said.
Furthermore, Tito also asked all regional heads and public officials to refrain from holding ceremonies and celebrations, whether for personal or government events.
"So, whether it's anniversaries, regional anniversaries, or other official ceremonial activities, they should be conducted simply, such as by serving tumpeng (rice cone), giving alms to orphans, orphans, or the underprivileged. These are far more beneficial in this situation," he said.
According to Tito, events that appear wasteful will only provoke public anger in the current situation.
"If parties, with music, are cut, made into TikToks, and so on, are compared to the public demanding a low profile from officials, this will only create new ammunition that can be exploited by anyone who wants to undermine the situation," he said.
Tito also asked all regional heads to remind their families about flaunting luxurious lifestyles on social media, or in person. This will provoke public anger.
"This includes flexing, there should be no flexing of luxury, whether by officials or their families. Please remind your families. Especially regarding dress code, the use of rings, watches, and jewelry, be careful about vehicles. This is a very bad and sensitive situation," he said.
