Kompolnas Urges National Police to Take Affan's Death Case to Criminal Court

JAKARTA - The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) is urging the National Police (Polri) to bring the case of Affan Kurniawan's death, which involved seven Brimob (Mobile Brigade) officers, to the criminal court.

The National Police are currently conducting a case review regarding the handling of the case. The investigation and preliminary investigation have found criminal elements.

"This is the first stage, so it cannot stop at an ethics hearing, where the maximum sentence is what the sentence is, and the verdict is dismissal. But we hope this can also be developed into a criminal case," Kompolnas Commissioner Choirul Anam told reporters on Tuesday, September 2.

Criminal action, Anam said, will send a message to all Polri members to comply with the rules while on duty.

This will encourage them to be more cautious and prioritize humane actions, as has always been emphasized.

"This will reinforce the message that fellow police officers must also comply with regulations and other regulations when carrying out their duties, including prioritizing humane and persuasive actions," said Choirul Anam.

The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) is known to be the external supervisor involved in today's case review process.

Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver, was killed after being run over by a tactical vehicle in the Bendungan Hilir area on August 28, 2025.

Seven Brimob officers are being sought in connection with the case: Police Commissioner Kosmas, Police Brigadier Rohmat, Police Inspector M. Rohyani, Police Brigadier Danang, Police Brigadier Mardin, Baraka Jana Edi, and Baraka Yohanes David.

Of the seven, two—Police Commissioner Kosmas and Police Brigadier Rohmat—are facing dismissal. Their actions are considered serious violations.

Police Commissioner Kosmas was in the front passenger seat, next to the driver, during the series of collisions. Police Brigadier Rohmat was driving the tactical vehicle.

The other five Brimob officers are facing charges for moderate violations. They are Aipda M. Rohyani, Briptu Danang, Briptu Mardin, Baraka Jana Edi, and Baraka Yohanes David.
