Not Rice, Red Chilies Price in Jakarta Soaring

JAKARTA - The Head of the Jakarta Department of Food Security, Maritime Affairs, and Agriculture (DKPKP), Hasudungan Sidabalok, stated that one food commodity has experienced a significant price increase recently: red chilies.

"The price increase is for large red chilies, up by one thousand rupiah per kilogram. Then for red cayenne peppers, it's up by three thousand rupiah per kilogram," said Hasudungan at Jakarta City Hall on Monday, September 1.

This situation differs from several regions, where rice prices increased in the market at the end of August 2025.

In Jakarta, rice prices did experience price increases, but not significantly. For example, premium Ramos rice rose by IDR 370 to IDR 14,773 per kilogram, while medium rice rose by IDR 460 to IDR 13,902 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, the prices of other food commodities remained stable. "Even shallots have dropped by IDR 1,000. For other staples, fruits, potatoes have dropped by IDR 500, and oranges by IDR 1,000," said Hasudungan.

Meanwhile, Hasudungan revealed that food stocks in Jakarta are currently sufficient for the foreseeable future.

For example, rice remains available at around 303,000 tons, beef at 40,000 tons, chicken at 74,000 tons, eggs at 21,000 tons, red chili peppers at 9,000 tons, curly red chili peppers at 10,000 tons, shallots at 8,000 tons, garlic at 8,000 tons, granulated sugar at 60,000 tons, and cooking oil at 66,000 tons.

"The availability of strategic food items like rice, meat, and eggs is sufficient. The food outlook for the next two months is secure," Hasudungan said.

"Therefore, the public does not need to panic buy. We, the Jakarta government, guarantee that our food supplies will be sufficient for the next two months. Stocks are also adequate," he added.
