Police Name 4 Students Suspected Of 27 Molotov Bombings In Samarinda

SAMARINDA - Samarinda City Police, East Kalimantan, named four students as suspects in the case of assembling 27 Molotov cocktails found in Campus 2 Mulawarman University (Unmul), Jalan Banggeris, Samarinda, Sunday, August 31 evening.

Samarinda Police Chief Kombes Hendri Umar said the four students were now being investigated intensively by investigators from the Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim).

"Of the 22 people we arrested last night, four people with the initials MZ, FK, MAG, and AR are currently being processed further because they are strongly suspected of knowing and playing a direct role in making Molotov cocktails," said Hendri in Samarinda, Antara, Monday, September 1.

The discovery of the Molotov cocktail began with intelligence information regarding plans for anarchist action in a demonstration held Monday. Based on this information, a joint team from the Samarinda Police and the TNI visited a student secretariat at the Unmul Faculty of Teachers and Education (FKIP).

At that location, the police found 22 students along with 27 Molotov cocktails ready to use. In addition, the authorities also secured the remaining raw materials, namely a jerry can containing a ptamax, a roll of perca cloth for the axis, and scissors.

According to Hendri, the four suspects had different roles. "There are those who are in charge of delivering raw materials using motorbikes, some cutting fabrics, to assembling bottles into ready-to-use bombs," he said.

The other 18 students who were detained were repatriated after the initial interrogation. The police have coordinated with the Deputy Chancellor III of Mulawarman University for their return.

"After the interrogation, these 18 students were not proven to have direct ties to the manufacture or storage of bombs, so we returned them to the university," said Hendri.

He emphasized that the investigation of the case was transparent and fair. Hendri also emphasized that this act was the work of a handful of individuals who did not represent the student movement as a whole.

"We remain committed to providing humanist security against demonstrations, ensuring freedom of expression can be channeled in an orderly and peaceful manner without an anarchist act," he said.
