Puan: Once Again, I Apologize If DPR Not Yet Perfect
JAKARTA—House of Representatives Speaker Puan Maharani once again apologized for any shortcomings in the performance of council members. As DPR leader, Puan assured that her institution would improve itself and work better for the benefit of the people throughout Indonesia.
Puan made this statement in response to the mass unrest that occurred on the 80th anniversary of the DPR RI, and the less than conducive national situation in recent days.
"On behalf of the members of the DPR and the DPR leadership, I once again apologize if we, as representatives of the people, have not been able to perform our duties perfectly," Puan stated after paying her respects at the residence of Affan Kurniawan in the Blora area of Menteng, Jakarta, on Saturday, August 30.
As previously reported, Affan died after being hit by a Brimob Barakuda armored vehicle during a protest protesting the DPR at the DPR building, which spread to the Pejompongan area of Jakarta, on Thursday, August 28.
Puan promised to evaluate the performance of DPR members and accept public input for the benefit of the people and the progress of the Indonesian nation.
"We will evaluate, we will improve ourselves, and we will listen to the people's aspirations in a healthier, better way to build the nation," she said.
"And let's build this nation together. Let's discuss and listen to input from national figures," added the first woman to serve as Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives.
Puan also appealed to all parties to exercise restraint to maintain a conducive atmosphere and prevent further loss of life.
"Everyone must exercise restraint and not hurt each other; let's respect each other," Puan concluded.
