August 29th Demonstration Riot: Where's Gibran Rakabuming Raka?

JAKARTA - Large-scale demonstrations erupted again on Friday, August 29, 2025, in various locations in Jakarta. Not only in Jakarta, but also in various regions across Indonesia.

These demonstrations were the aftermath of the tragedy of online motorcycle taxi driver Affan Kurniawan being run over by a Brimob vehicle on August 28, 2025. The demonstration ended in chaos after the crowd clashed with security forces. Several demonstrators reportedly suffered minor to serious injuries.

Amidst the heated situation, public attention turned to Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Many questioned Gibran's stance and presence, given that the demonstrations demanded the government immediately reverse several controversial policies and a transparent investigation into Affan Kurniawan's death by Brimob.

However, Gibran was rumored to be present at a sporting event in Jakarta during the demonstration, but the organizers denied his presence. On the evening of Friday, August 28, 2025, Gibran was confirmed to have visited Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) and Pelni Hospital to visit victims of the demonstration.

As of this afternoon, there has been no official statement from Gibran, as Vice President, regarding the still-heated demonstrations.
