Due to Protest Violence, Three Malls Closed on Saturday for Security

JAKARTA - Several malls in several major cities in Indonesia have decided to close their doors today, Saturday, August 30, 2025. This closure is due to the ongoing protests, not only in Jakarta, but also in Yogyakarta and Surabaya.

The demonstrations were triggered by various factors, from the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver after being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle to the controversy surrounding the allowances for members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI).

This situation has led several mall managers to temporarily suspend operations for safety reasons. Here are three malls that will be closed on Saturday, August 30, 2025.

1. Atrium Senen Mall, Jakarta

The management of Atrium Senen Mall announced the closure via its official Instagram account @mal.atriumsenen today.

"In light of the current situation in the Senen area, we would like to inform you that on Saturday, August 30, 2025, Atrium Senen Mall will be temporarily closed until further notice," the management wrote.

According to management, this decision was made for the comfort, security, and safety of everyone.

"We will soon provide official information regarding mall operations through the Atrium Senen Mall social media accounts," they continued.

In addition, all events scheduled at the mall for Saturday and Sunday, August 31, 2025, have been rescheduled.

"All events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Atrium Senen Mall have been rescheduled until a later date," wrote management.

A similar policy had actually been implemented the day before, Friday, August 29, 2025. The mall, located near the Kwitang Mobile Brigade Command Headquarters (Mako Brimob), was closed due to demonstrations in the area.

2. Pakuwon Mall Jogja

A similar situation occurred in Yogyakarta. Pakuwon Mall Jogja, located near the Yogyakarta Regional Police, was also closed today. The management spoke out via its official Instagram account @pakuwonmall.jogja.

"Due to the unfavorable conditions in the area around Pakuwon Mall Jogja, we will temporarily close operations today, Saturday, August 30, 2025," he said.

Management emphasized that this decision was made for the comfort and safety of visitors, tenants, and employees. They also ensured that operations would return to normal on Sunday, August 31, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM WIB.

The previous day, Friday, the mall also closed operations early, at around 7:30 PM WIB. This was due to a large-scale demonstration in the Yogyakarta Regional Police area.

3. Tunjungan Plaza, Surabaya

In Surabaya, Tunjungan Plaza is also temporarily closed today. The decision was made following demonstrations that lasted until the early hours of the morning. This information was shared on the official Instagram account @tunjungan_plaza.

"We would like to inform you that the mall's operating hours are as follows: Saturday, August 30, 2025, it will be closed and will reopen on Sunday, August 31, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM WIB," he wrote.
