Prabowo Urged To Remove National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit In The Aftermath Of Affan Kurniawan's Death
JAKARTA - The civil society coalition urged the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo to be removed from his position after the repressive actions taken by his subordinates during the security of the demonstration.
The repressive action even claimed the lives of an online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, on Thursday, August 28 evening. He died after being run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle in the Pejompongan area, Jakarta.
This was conveyed by the Chairman of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI), Muhammad Isnur.
In total there are 12 demands submitted by hundreds of non-governmental organizations, including Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) to the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS).
"The National Police Chief must resign or the president immediately remove Sigit Listyo Prabowo as the National Police Chief," Isnur said in a written statement, Friday, August 29.
Sigit, according to Isnur, has failed to turn the Bhayangkara Corps into more humane.
"Not only the National Police Chief, the National Police institution must be evaluated and reformed thoroughly," he said.
Prabowo was also asked to form an independent team to carry out investigations and investigations against all perpetrators of violence against the mass action.
"The president needs to order independent and transparent investigations into various violations, including but not limited to securing demonstrations and then start a systematic police reform agenda," he said.
"It's time for the police to be forced to turn into a professional, accountable, democratic, and far from abuse of power," continued Isnur.

As previously reported, President Prabowo Subianto expressed his disappointment with the repressive actions of the police officers who hit and ran over Affan Kurniawan. He had ordered the incident to be thoroughly investigated.
"If it is found that they are acting out of accordance and applicable regulations, we will take strict action according to the applicable law," Prabowo was quoted as saying in a video statement, Friday, August 29.
Seven policemen were arrested in connection with the random incident that hit this ojol driver. They are Kompol C, Aipda M, Bripka R, Briptu D, Bripda M, Baraka Y, and Baraka J.
Those involved are currently undergoing examination by the Divpropam Police Headquarters and Propam Mako Brimob.
As a result of the incident, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has also apologized and admitted that he regretted the incident.
In addition to the ojol driver who was hit by the police to death, it is known that there was also an online motorcycle taxi driver who was injured. The driver was named Moh Umar Amarudin.
