TuneIn Now Broadcasts Apple Music Radio Station To 75 Million Listeners Around The World

JAKARTA - In an effort to reclaim Spotify's music streaming market share, Apple Music is working with TuneIn to bring the station to 75 million monthly active listeners.

In 2020, Apple Music controls about 30% of the music streaming market share in the United States, equivalent to Spotify. However, in the following few years, that figure is down. In 2024, Apple Music's market share fell to 25%, while Spotify increased to 37%.

To overcome this decline, Apple is in partnership with digital radio platform TuneIn. This partnership allows six Apple Music radio streaming stations to be available to 75 million monthly active listeners TuneIn, starting Wednesday, August 27, 2025.

TuneIn, based in San Francisco, distributes music to global networks of home and car speakers. Apart from Apple Music, TuneIn also partners with well-known broadcasters such as iHeartMedia, C-Span, NPR, ESPN Radio, as well as international broadcasters from around the world.

Reportedly, Apple approached TuneIn for this partnership at the end of 2024. TuneIn stated that their app and website will show a link to Apple Music, making it easier for users to register for the service.

However, the success of this strategy still has to be proven. As The Wall Street Journal reports, Apple has always had difficulty attracting and defending listeners.

One of the causes is the nature of music streaming services. All major streaming services have almost the same music catalog, making it difficult to stand out. No exclusive products like the Severance series for Apple Music.

Problems with Paid Models

Another main reason is how Apple Music attracts listeners. Apple Music doesn't have free levels; its services are always paid for. Although Apple often offers extended free trials, it doesn't guarantee listeners will survive.

In contrast, Apple Music's main competitor Spotify provides ad-supported free rates. The appeal of free services is enough to attract new users. However, ads aren't Spotify's only drawbacks. Free users have limitations such as limited number of song "skips", limited control over played songs, lower audio quality, and no offline listening options.

This limitation actually encourages Spotify free users to switch to paid subscriptions. Spotify's free rate is quite annoying to make users want to upgrade to paid plans.
