DPR: Indonesian Ambassador To The US Must Bridge The Issue Of Indonesian Citizens Affected By Trump's Policy
JAKARTA - Member of Commission I DPR RI, Junico Siahaan responded to the appointment of Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Indonesia to the United States (US) by President Prabowo Subianto, who at the same time filled the vacant strategic position for the past two years. Nico hopes that the Indonesian ambassador to the US who has just been able to bridge the issue of the status of Indonesian citizens as a result of the US President Donald Trump's policy.
"The inauguration of this Ambassador is expected not only to close vacancies, but also to emphasize Indonesia's commitment to playing a strategic and active role in the eyes of the world, while ensuring the continuity and effectiveness of state diplomacy is maintained," said Nico, Wednesday, August 27.
"Also helping to bridge the problem of citizen status affected by the Trump administration's immigration decisions, including Indonesian citizens studying in the US," he continued.
Nico emphasized that the placement of Ambassadors in Washington must also be in line with strategic diplomatic needs. Because according to him, the United States is not only a trading partner, but also a geopolitical axis that affects regional security, investment, and technology trade in the Indo-Pacific region.
"The vacancy of office for two years has the potential to weaken Indonesia's coordination on various strategic issues, including economic cooperation, security, and other global issues," he said.
Nico also highlighted the importance of qualified diplomatic capacity. According to him, Ambassador figures must have extensive international networks, high level negotiating capabilities, and sensitivity to global political dynamics. Especially in the context of shifting US priorities in the Indo-Pacific and strategic competition between the US and China.
"We encourage the Government to place the appointment of diplomatic officials based on meritocracy and competence, so that national interests in the international arena can be maintained optimally," said Nico.
The member of the Commission in the DPR in charge of foreign affairs also emphasized the need for continuity of diplomacy. Nico assessed that strategic positions such as the US Ambassador should not experience a long vacancy, so that coordination of foreign policies will continue to run consistently and effectively.
"Indroyono Soesilo's placement is a momentum to ensure that Indonesia's interests in Washington are carried out professionally, transparently, and responsively to global challenges," concluded the West Java I electoral district legislator.
