Is It True That Intermittent Fasting Is Related To Diabetes? This Is What Doctors Say

JAKARTA - Intermittent fasting is a diet regulation by fasting, which is to use a time lag to eat food. Generally done within 16 hours of fasting, and 8 hours to eat food.

However, there are people who intermittent fasting extremely, by reducing the meal time shorter than the fasting time. This is often done to reduce weight faster.

The excessive intermittent fasting is highly not recommended by doctors. The internal medicine specialist at Eka Hospital Permata Hijau, Pandu Tridana Sakti, said that excessive intermittent fasting can cause the body to become weak, because it does not have food intake to form into energy.

"Intermitten fasting should not be excessive. When you don't eat at all and you don't have enough energy reserves to spend during fasting, you can drop (body)," said Doctor Pandu, during a media meeting in Semanggi, Jakarta, written on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

When fasting in the intermittent fasting is done for too long, the hunger that arises will also be very high. This can make food consumption a lot, thus risking insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes.

"When he eats time, he eats over, then immediately goes up the sugar. That can cause insulin resistance," he said.

If the meal hours are irregular, insulin in the body will also fall apart. Conditions can cause hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) which is at risk of damaging the body's damp organs.

"So our body insulin is not regular. That's why we eat and have to be regular, there are already settings from the body. Everyone is different," he explained.

Therefore, it is recommended to have regular meal hours, and if you do intermittent fasting with too long fasting hours. This is done so that insulin levels in the body remain good, then it can prevent diabetes.

"For example, having breakfast is used to, continuing to diet and not having breakfast, it will make you weak that morning, because insulin came out but no food came in. So the sugar in the body decreased. Eating hours were very influential," concluded Doctor Pandu.
