BPOM Manokwari Tightens OBA Supervision, Finds 131 Thousand Illegal Products Throughout 2024
MANOKWARI - The Manokwari Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has tightened supervision of the circulation of natural ingredients (OBA) in West Papua after finding more than 131 thousand illegal and dangerous products throughout 2024.
Head of BPOM Manokwari Agustince Werimon said the findings were the result of intensification of supervision of 1,280 OBA distribution facilities in the Manokwari, South Manokwari, and Fakfak areas with economic value of more than Rp1.7 billion.
There are still many herbal medicines and traditional medicines circulating without distribution permits, even containing dangerous chemicals. This can cause serious side effects, harm consumers, even life-threatening," said Agustince in Manokwari, Antara, Tuesday, August 26.
Troubled products that are still circulating include lawing oil, honey lanang, strong honey, cancer fit, bad luck, wild wasps, wantong petal linu, montalin, and GS fat jamu.
BPOM Manokwari noted, from January to December 2024, there were 105 product samples tested by the laboratory. Meanwhile, from January to July 2025, 48 samples were tested with similar results.
"This data shows our consistency in ensuring the safety of products circulating in the community," said Agustince.
To suppress the circulation of illegal drugs, BPOM provides technical guidance for business actors to understand their responsibilities in ensuring the quality and safety of products, as well as recognizing the role of BPOM in supervision.
Collaboration with business actors and stakeholders is expected to strengthen public confidence in natural medicinal products that are truly safe, efficacious, and quality.
"Products must be safe, quality, and have a distribution permit so that people are protected. BPOM is present as a partner, companion, as well as supervisor," he said.
