Syria Accuses Israel Of Establishing Military Posts In The Demilitarization Zone

JAKARTA - Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani on Monday accused Israel of violating 1974's Release Agreement by establishing intelligence facilities and military posts in demilitarized territory to advance its "expansionist plans and separation."

Foreign Minister Shaibani delivered the statement at an emergency meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss the Israeli genocide war in the Gaza Strip.

"Israelen occupation violates 1974's Release Agreement, UN Security Council resolution, and principles of respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity by establishing intelligence centers and military posts within the restricted zone, which supports expansionist projects and divides them," he said. , reported Anadolu August 25.

Foreign Minister Shaibani further said the measures aimed at "torn apart Syria's national order, reinstigating sectarian clashes, and turning the occupied Syrian Golan Heights into a base to annex more territory."

"Syria will continue to reject the separation," he said.

Syria's top diplomat urged the United Nations "to fully assume responsibility in documenting and stopping Israeli attacks and violations", calling on the OIC "to support Syria's position in the international arena and rejecting any attempt to legitimize the occupation or impose reality at the expense of Syrian sovereignty."

It is known, agreed in the 1973 Middle East war, the Syria-Israel Disengagement Agreement aims to end direct clashes between the two sides.

The agreement establishes arrangements to withdraw troops and establish two main lines, known as the Alpha and Bravo lines, which separate Syrian and Israeli troops.

A buffer zone was created between the two lines under the supervision of the UN Release Observer Force (UNDOF).

Damascus has repeatedly condemned Israel's continued abuse of its sovereignty and affirmed its commitment to the 1974 release agreement.

Israel itself declared the agreement null and void after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime by the end of 2024.

Over the past seven months, Israeli soldiers have occupied Mount Hermon (Jabal al-Sheikh) and 15 kilometers wide security routes in several southern Syrian regions, controlling more than 40,000 Syrians within the captured buffer zone.

Israel has occupied most of the Syrian Golan Heights since 1967. Syrian officials say Israel is utilizing Assad's overthrow to expand its occupation.
