Amorim: Manchester United Must Improve After Disappointing Results
JAKARTA - Ruben Amorim said Manchester United must improve as a team after extending their winless 2025/2026 season by squandering a lead to draw 1-1 against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday, August 24, 2025.
Leny Yoro's deflected header gave Manchester United the lead in the 58th minute after Bruno Fernandes missed a first-half penalty.
However, substitute Emile Smith Rowe equalized for Fulham 15 minutes later.
After losing 0-1 at home to Arsenal in their season opener last week, the Red Devils have only one point from two matches. They next face a tough Carabao Cup tie against League Two's Grimsby Town on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
With his team failing to pick up another positive result, Amorim said his players need to refocus.
"I think we scored a goal and then we forgot how we play. We need to improve a lot as a team."
"The moment that changed the game was our goal. We really wanted to win. It was a good feeling when we scored and everyone on the pitch was thinking, 'Let's maintain this lead and try to win the game.'
"For me, that was the moment where we had to enjoy it more and put pressure on the opponent. We tried to press very high and leave a lot of space."
"You need to win to have a little bit of a relaxed feeling, not in the intensity and the way we play, but in keeping our minds in check."
"We struggled a bit at the end because the momentum changed more with Fulham's goal. In the first half, we were there—we missed the penalty."
"Fernandes has so much responsibility with him that I was less happy (when he missed). He was thinking about the past. Now, we have to keep going no matter what," Amorim told ESPN.
Meanwhile, Amorim said he was not concerned by the failure of his £200 million summer signings to score goals so far this season.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko are still waiting for their first goals for the club following their big-money arrivals.
"I think the feeling is there. We're going to score those goals because we're creating so many chances."
"Sesko needs time. It's not easy to come off the bench and play. It's very fast, and he understands that it's faster than the Bundesliga. He's not playing at his best, and sometimes we need to help him more," said Amorim.
