3 Airports Most Prone to Lost Luggage, Changi Airport Is One of Them!
JAKARTA - A study has revealed the top 10 airports most prone to lost baggage incidents. The study was released by Arka, a California-based provider of specialized shipping packaging.
As reported by Travel + Leisure on Monday, August 25, 2025, the study was conducted by considering two main variables: passenger numbers and online search volume for lost and found services.
To fairly compare airports, search data was adjusted for passenger numbers. This calculation is based on the number of searches per million passengers, allowing us to see which airports are most frequently searched for regarding lost baggage.
Furthermore, data on baggage mishandling rates in each region was also added. This figure is calculated per thousand passengers to provide a broader picture.
This method helps identify airports with the highest level of interest in lost baggage. As a result, Miami International Airport in the United States ranked first as the worst airport for baggage handling.
It was reported that there were 306 searches for lost and found services per million flights. This airport also has a baggage mishandling rate of 5.5 per 1,000 passengers.
Second place is held by another US airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Third place is held by Changi Airport in Singapore.
Although frequently named the best airport in the world, Changi Airport handles a total of 67 million passengers annually. This number increases the likelihood of baggage issues.
"Changi Airport serves approximately 67 million passengers annually, making it one of the busiest airports in the world. This large passenger volume naturally increases the likelihood of baggage issues," the Travel + Leisure report stated.
Changi Airport recorded 265 searches per million flights for baggage, with a mishandling rate of 3.1 per 1,000 passengers.
"This relatively high risk of baggage handling places Changi among the top airports with the most frequent baggage issues experienced by passengers," it added.
Lost baggage can ruin travel plans, so it's important for travelers to be aware of the potential for it to plan their trips better. The airport is also advised to continuously improve its systems to ensure the safety of passengers' belongings.
"On the other hand, airports must also continue to invest in improving their systems to ensure passengers' luggage arrives safely and on time," he concluded.
