QRIS Now Can Be Used In Japan, BI Targets Retail Investment Market From Sakura Country
JAKARTA - Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) Perry Warjiyo emphasized the importance of implementing cross-border QRIS with Japan.
In addition to simplifying transactions between the people of the two countries, this step is also expected to encourage an increase in investment in Japanese citizens to Indonesia.
"I challenge Apuvindo and ASPI to immediately work together, so that the account in Yen can be used to buy Indonesian state bonds including retail SRBI, through mobile banking and cross-border connectivity," Perry said during the inauguration of the QRIS Cross Border Indonesia-Japan, which was held online, Monday, August 25.
Perry said, this is a new chapter in the collaboration of the digital economy and finance where combining local currency transactions, cross-border payment connectivity, and access to financial markets
He added, so that it can create an easy, safe, and efficient payment system, so that it not only simplifies transactions, but also builds an inclusive digital economy.
"This is especially important for MSMEs the backbone of the community as well as for tourists and business people, so that we can become a more integrated part of the global economy," he explained.
Perry conveyed that the expansion of QRIS' access to Japan has also opened a new chapter of transactions in the Asian economic area because the use of QRIS has been connected to the payment system in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and soon Vietnam.
"With QRIS now connected to Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and immediately to Vietnam and other ASEAN countries, we are building an Asian economic network that is interconnected through a digital payment system," he said.
Perry added that the local currency transaction (LCT) of Indonesia-Japan became the second largest position after Indonesia-China transactions.

“Transaksi mata uang lokal sebagian besar didorong oleh aktivitas ekspor dan impor. Namun kita ingin lebih jauh, mengombinasikan transaksi mata uang lokal dengan pembayaran lintas batas digital,” jelasnya.

Meanwhile, based on the value of LCT transactions, Indonesia's transactions with China touched 11.7 billion US dollars in the first semester of 2025.
Meanwhile, LCT transactions with Japan touched 5.1 billion US dollars until July 2025.
