Lord Mayor Schrinner: Celebrating Indonesian Culture and Independence Day in Brisbane Is an Honor

JAKARTA - Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Australia, Adrian Schrinner, praised the celebration of Indonesia's 80th Independence Day, held in the heart of his city.

The Indonesian Students Association of Australia (PPIA Queensland) held a cultural performance and culinary delights at "Pesta Rasa" (Feast of Taste) at King George Square in celebration of Indonesia's 80th anniversary.

Lord Mayor Schrinner expressed his pride that the Indonesian Independence Day celebration was held in the heart of Brisbane, right in front of City Hall.

"Celebrating Indonesian culture and Independence Day in Brisbane is an honor," said Lord Mayor Schrinner in a statement from the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney on Sunday, August 24.

"I am very proud of our multicultural community, especially the Indonesian community. The presence of Indonesian students makes this city even more vibrant and colorful," he continued.

A variety of cultural performances enlivened the Festival of Feelings, which began with a flag-raising ceremony. The Muhibah Angklung performance, along with traditional dances, music, and creative expressions from the community were also featured.

The event culminated in an energetic stage performance by the popular music group Project Pop, who entertained visitors with their hits, full of spirit and nostalgia.

More than 20 food booths were also available, offering a variety of culinary delights such as batagor (fried meatballs), sweet martabak (sweet martabak), and nasi ayam geprek (smashed chicken rice with sambal matah), a favorite among visitors.

"Culture is an important connector in the relationship between the two countries, especially in these two aspects," explained Indonesian Consul General in Sydney, Pendekar Muda Leonard Sondakh.

The presence of international students from a Brisbane campus added to the excitement. Johann, one of the visitors who spontaneously joined in, expressed his admiration.

"The atmosphere was very lively, the presenter was interactive, and the musical performances were truly high-quality," he said.

Meanwhile, Viktor, Chairman of the Maesaan Queensland Family Association, expressed his willingness to take special annual leave on August 22nd to relive the nostalgia of celebrating Indonesia's independence.

"I can't wait to get here," he said enthusiastically.
