North Korea-South Korea Heats Up, Troops Open Each Other's Warning Shots

JAKARTA - North Korea (North Korea) has accused South Korea of serious provocations. These allegations came after South Korean forces opened warning shots at North Korean soldiers who were building barriers along the North Korea-South Korea border.

Deputy Chief of General Staff of the North Korean People's Army Ko Jong Chol said the warning shot on Tuesday, August 19 coincided with a joint South Korean-United States summer military exercise. According to him, South Korea deliberately acted so to increase tensions, reported by AP News, Saturday, August 23.

South Korea itself did not deny that it had fired the warning shot. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the action was taken because North Korean soldiers had crossed the military headquarters line in the central border region while carrying out construction work.

The North Korean army immediately returned to its territory without further incidents. They also did not reply to the fire, "said a South Korean military statement.

Previously, in recent months, it was reported that the South Korean military had used loudspeakers and warning shots to dispel North Korean soldiers crossing the demarcation line.

This incident is largely seen as an accidental incident, given North Korean troops are building antitank barriers, growing mines, and strengthening defenses at the border amid rising tensions. While South Korea under the new leadership, President Lee Jae Myung is actively pushing for peace with North Korea.
