BRIN Partners With I-CATS To Develop Aviation And Space Research

JAKARTA In an effort to advance the space sector in Indonesia, BRIN has again formed an international partnership. This time, the institution is partnering with i-CATS, a university located in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Both have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, August 21, 2025. Through this collaboration, BRIN through the Aviation and Space Research Organization (ORPA) wants to strengthen aviation and space research.

The focus of this collaboration includes two main research fields, namely aeronautical technology and satellite technology. Delivered by the Head of BRIN Aviation Technology Research Center, Fadilah Hasim, the two will continue the collaboration of the previous partnership.

BRIN and i-CATS have worked together in preparation for the ninth and 11th International Seminar on Aerospace Science and Technology (ISAST).

"Since February, we have discussed with i-CATS. From there, mutual interest emerged in two fields, namely aeronautics technology and satellites," said Fadilah, quoted on the official BRIN website on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

This latest partnership will run for several years. In the first three years, research will focus on two specific topics, namely aerodynamics analysis and structural vibrations on aircraft sharklets and winglets.

In addition, both will focus on research and development of the Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) for small satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

"These two researches not only increase scientific capacity, but also open up opportunities for real applications for flight efficiency and the sustainability of small satellite operations," said Fadilah.
